2009 Chicago World Cup International Amateur Soccer Tournament
Thirty two amateur national teams, representing foreign and local communities of Chicago, to compete in the 4th annual edition of an international soccer tournament, to show the world how diversity makes Chicago the best candidate to host the 2016 Olympics.
Is there a better year than the one Chicago will – finally – know if it will host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games, to highlight a great multicultural sport event such as the fourth annual Chicago World Cup, where Amateur soccer players from Chicago foreign communities, expatriates from the entire World and local American citizens, will be representing their motherland national teams by playing the 2009 edition of the tournament.
The Chicago World Cup Soccer Tournament follows a very popular and simple "One day World-Cup" format: In each of the four qualifying groups – each made of four national teams – only the top two teams advance to the quarter finals after the morning games. Playoffs start there and winners advance up to the Championship played at the end of the day. Fun to play, great to watch, easy to understand are the elements making the Chicago World Cup so popular!
The Chicago World Cup was created in 2006 by Sebastien Labat, a European expatriate, who had moved from France a few years before. With the actual 2006 FIFA World-Cup – organized in Germany that year – approaching, Sebastien was looking around Chicago for World-Cup related activities that would allow expatriates like him, to enjoy the atmosphere of the event as much as they would back home. But because he did not find any, he decided to create his own, the first amateur World-Cup soccer tournament in the Windy City. Famous players of the Chicago Soccer community like the Chicago Fire or Fado Irish Pub supported that initiative from day one, with no hesitation. To date, the Chicago World Cup remains the most multicultural soccer tournament in town, gathering countries as diverse as China, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, Brazil, USA, Sweden, etc.
"There is no such City as Chicago to organize a World-Cup or Olympic type event because there are so many foreign communities here; and thanks to a great organization, the Chicago World Cup is the best time of the year for us, not only to have fun and relax playing a sport we love, but also to meet people from different cultures and share our experience with them. Some of the players are here every year, some became real friends and others will remain the team to beat, but this is a unique experience, nicer and nicer every year” says Stephane, player of Team France, made of teachers of the Chicago French School “Lycée Français”.
The 2009 Chicago World Cup will take place on Saturday June 27th at the Chicago YMCA Rauner and based on the success of its past editions, it will be surrounded by other official events this year such as: --- A formal public banquet, where the players will have a chance to meet their motherland country’s dignitaries, as well as sports personnalities and major actors of the Chicago community. They will all be able to share their thoughts about the bid of Chicago to host the 2016 Olympics while they will be participating in the official drawing of the Chicago World Cup tournament that night. The Chicago World Cup banquet will take place on Friday June 26th, 2009 in a place to be communicated. --- A men’s qualifier tournament, that will give a chance to men’s’ teams who never played in one of the previous Chicago World Cup editions, to qualify for the 2009 main tournament. The qualifier tournament will be played on Saturday June 20th, 2009 at the Chicago YMCA Rauner. The winning team will be offered a spot in the 2009 Chicago World Cup. --- The first Coed Chicago World Cup tournament, open to all coed teams, allowing female soccer players to enjoy the fun of the Chicago World Cup because even though female soccer is not that popular in other countries around the world, it is here in Chicago. The Coed Chicago World Cup will be played on Saturday June 20th, 2009 at the Chicago YMCA Rauner.
While the winning teams of both the Men’s Chicago World Cup Qualifier and the Coed Chicago World Cup tournament will be recognized during the official Chicago World Cup banquet on June 26th, we can expect the winners of the main tournament to be once again, recognized at Toyota Park, home of the Chicago Fire and of the Chicago Red Stars
As every year, tons of gifts, giveaways and prizes will be distributed to the tournament players and spectators through welcome packs, teams and individuals awards, sampling and hourly sweepstakes. Part of the benefits of the event will be given to an organization dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer such as City of Hope or Livestrong.
